Who Started Breast Cancer Awareness Month?
Breast Cancer Awareness Month began in 1985. It started as a partnership between the American Cancer Society and the pharmaceutical division of Imperial Chemical Industries. Breast Cancer Awareness Month was established with the help of Betty Ford, former First Lady of the United States. During the time in which her husband, Gerald Ford, was president, Betty Ford was diagnosed with breast cancer. Seeing his wife’s struggle, he became more aware of breast cancer and brought more attention to it in the US.
What Is The Objective of Breast Cancer Awareness Month?
The goal of Breast Cancer Awareness Month is to educate women about breast cancer, so that they could be aware of their breast health. One of the utmost goals of Breast Cancer Awareness Month is to encourage mammograms as an important tool to be used to fight against breast cancer.
How Is It Celebrated?
It is celebrated by conducting events such as fundraisers to raise money for breast cancer research and campaigns that encourage doing mammograms and self exams to help detect breast cancer early on. Many people who have breast cancer or are survivors tell their story or explain how they got through it. The pink ribbon is a prominent symbol that represents Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It often appears on clothing, landmarks or as a symbol for organizations that support or fund breast cancer awareness.
